A new development could give Sushant Singh Rajput case a new turn. The late actor’s family have questioned the CBI closure report of the actor’s death which was filed nearly five years after the tragic incident in March 2025, according to news agency ANI. Their counsel, Advocate Varun Singh on October 24, alleged that key documents related to the case had been withheld and that the report was “incomplete and inconclusive”, as per the agency. Singh says this has created a legal barrier as it effectively stalls the filing of protest petitions and poses an immense obstacle for the bereaved family.
Advocate Varun Singh told ANI, “We do intend to move the court, but the major hurdle right now is that we have not been provided with the complete set of documents accompanying the closure report. Without access to the full report and annexures, it is impossible for us to file a protest petition.”
He added that under the law, it is the independent right of the complainant to file a protest petition against closure reports and that a magistrate may continue proceedings if inconsistencies appear. However, that is not possible if annexed documents are not accessible and key records are missing.
“But for that, both the complainant and the magistrate must have access to the annexed documents. At present, neither can act because those records are missing, even though more than seven months have passed since the CBI filed its report,” he said.
The CBI closure report
The actor’s death in 2020 at his Bandra residence sparked massive nation-wide outrage and led to the case being transferred to the CBI after immense pressure by Rajput’s family and the public.
In March 2025, the CBI finally filed a closure report giving a clean chit to all those who were accused and named in the FIR filed after Rajput’s death, such as actress Rhea Chakraborty who was his ex-girlfriend and others. The report stated that there was no evidence to suggest that Rajput was harmed, confined or subjected to any criminal activity.
However, Rajput’s parents were not satisfied and now their legal representative has come out to criticise said report by pointing out discrepancies in it. According to the ANI report, he said that the findings were not definitive according to the language used in the report by the CBI themselves.
“The report states that ‘the possibility of suicide cannot be ruled out.’ That means the conclusion is uncertain. If the agency could not conclusively determine whether it was suicide, abetment to suicide, or homicide, should the case be closed at all? It was the CBI’s duty to establish the truth conclusively,” he observed.
Further inconsistencies
Finally there are further inconsistencies, allege the actors family and their counsel, such as: financial documents related to money transfers “in favour of” the accused which were never investigated properly, withholding of forensic and digital evidence including data examined in the US and, “lack of transparency” which undermined the case.
Advocate Singh questioned all of the inconsistencies saying, “Such transactions should have been examined for cheating, criminal breach of trust, or evidence of control over the victim. Any of these could have justified further investigation instead of premature closure.” He continued, “What is the report they received from America on digital evidence? Why is the CBI silent?”
He also brought to attention the extended period of the time that the CBI took to file a closure report and reiterated that it had been done in a “haphazard” manner. “Filing an incomplete report after five years raises serious questions about the manner in which the investigation was concluded,” he remarked. When asked if political pressure had influenced the investigations, he could not confirm but did again emphasize that discrepancies were “evident”.
The family of Sushant Singh Rajput still plans to pursue further legal proceedings and challenge the closure report once they are given access to all documents, annexed or otherwise. The family’s legal team will move ahead formally when the complete case file is shared by the intelligence agency.
