It’s officially reunion season as the romantic duo in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, recreate their iconic pose in London. As the cult-classic, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), completes 30 years, their characters, Raj and Simran, have forever etched their name in the city. Commissioned by the Heart of London Business Alliance, as part of its “Scenes in the Square” public art trail, a bronze statue stands tall in London’s Leicester Square. This made DDLJ the first Indian film to be represented under the project, Shah Rukh Khan revealed.

Taking to social media, the Bollywood icon shared some visuals from their visit to London. Standing beside his co-star Kajol, the iconic duo recreated the pose from their film, as the statue was unveiled. Sporting an effortless and icy blue saree, Kajol embodied Simran, while SRK exuded elegance in a dashing overcoat.

‘Bade Bade Deshon Mein…’

Sharing pictures online, Shah Rukh Khan’s post read, “Bade Bade Deshon Mein, Aisi Chhoti Chhoti Baatein Hoti Rehti Hain, Senorita!” This iconic dialogue from DDLJ has earned a permanent spot in people’s minds and is synonymous with the film’s grandeur.

He continued, “Thrilled to unveil the bronze statue of Rai & Simran at London’s Leicester Square today, celebrating 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). Incredibly delighted that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be honoured with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail.” Calling his fans from the ‘bada desh’, he wrote, “Come meet Raj & Simran if and when you are in London. We would love to see you make more memories with DDLJ.”

‘DDLJ raised a whole generation on love and hope’

The internet could not keep calm when it saw these icons come to life. “DDLJ raised a whole generation on love and hope…Raj and Simran in Leicester Square feels perfectly deserved,” wrote a fan on X (formerly Twitter). “The train may have left 30 years ago, but the love for DDLJ stays timeless,” wrote another fan as DDLJ completed three decades in the hearts of its fans.

“Ek statue kya, Raj–Simran ke liye toh poora London ruk sakta hai [Entire London can stop for Raj-Simran],” wrote a spirited netizen under the post. The comment, “Requesting UK authorities to also install a statue of Bauji nearby shouting: ‘Jaa Simran Jaa!’ for full cinematic experience,” added a sense of humour to the nostalgia-driven online fans. “Raj & Simran aren’t just characters, they’re emotions that shaped an entire generation,” read another comment. “Bollywood didn’t just go global it went immortal,” said a fan. “DDLJ lived in our hearts first, now it’s on the streets of London too,” wrote a user as they echoed the sentiment of nostalgia and awe.

DDLJ continues to create history

DDLJ has become a historic mark in Bollywood and a feat for the Indian film industry. It continues to hold the record for becoming the longest-running film in theatres. Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir has been playing it for years since its release in 1995. It overtook Sholay’s record from 2001. It also completed 1000 consecutive weeks in the same cinema in 2014.

Despite a modest budget of Rs 4 crore, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge grossed over Rs 90 crore worldwide. It is one of the few films studied in academia, and the bronze statue became a marker of history in London, three decades after its release.
