The Karnataka government on Tuesday issued an order to cap the prices of movie tickets for all language films at Rs 200. The state government has introduced a price cap on movie tickets by amending the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014. Specifically, Rule 55 has been updated to include a new sub-rule (6), which states that the ticket price for each show in all theatres across the state — including multiplexes — must not exceed Rs 200. This cap applies to films in all languages and is inclusive of entertainment tax.

The new rule was proposed on Tuesday that will apply to all movie theatres, including multiplexes, in Karnataka. It will not depend on the language of the film and will include entertainment tax.

The public has been given 15 days to share their feedback on this proposed rule, a CNBC-TV18 report said. The draft aims to update the existing Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 2014, through a new section called the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025.

PVR INOX has not yet given an official response to the proposed rule. In Tamil Nadu, movie ticket prices are already capped at Rs 150, but this does not include taxes or service charges. PVR is also allowed to adjust ticket prices based on demand using dynamic pricing.

Currently, 40% of PVR INOX’s 1,761 screens are in southern India. The company is looking to grow further in this region because occupancy levels are higher here than in other parts of the country. In Karnataka alone, PVR INOX runs 219 screens across 37 cinemas.

Earlier this month, on July 2, Executive Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli told CNBC-TV18 that the company is seeing strong results in terms of footfall, ticket prices, and food and beverage sales.
