Sydney Sweeney, the blonde-haired, doe-eyed Hollywood actress, is known for her many works. From Euphoria to Anyone But You, the star suddenly found herself in the middle of a racist debate. ‘I have good jeans,’ a tagline that stuck with the Internet, became American Eagle’s one of the most controversial campaigns.
After being called out for being racist and promoting white superiority, social media was not kind to Sydney Sweeney. However, it was a particular reaction that stuck out. It was from none other than the US President Donald Trump himself. He took to Truth Social and wrote, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘hottest’ ad out there,” as a part of his rant against the ‘woke.’
‘It was surreal’
Months after the August debacle, speaking to GQ, Sydney Sweeney finally addressed the backlash. When questioned about the American Eagle and whether she was surprised by the reaction, she had a chuckle and a wide smile across her face. She said, “I did a jean ad. The reaction was definitely a surprise, but I love jeans.” Adding further, she noted, ” All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
The interviewer responded and said that jeans are ‘uncontroversial, awesome.’ Responding to the comment, Sydney reiterated the campaign and said, “I like your jeans.” However, it was the entire social media on one side and Trump on the other when it came to reacting to the jeans.
Sweeney reacted to the ‘very crazy moment’ and recalled, “It was surreal.” She then revealed, “I kind of just put my phone away. I was filming every day. I’m filming ‘Euphoria,’ so I’m working 16-hour days, and I don’t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn’t really see a lot of it.”

Sweeney on American Eagle ad
The ‘Christy‘ actress did not comment on the content of the American Eagle ad itself. She told GQ, “When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.” But she said that she “knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans,” so the situation “didn’t affect me one way or the other.”
