The ongoing inheritance battle over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate took a significant turn on Wednesday after the Delhi High Court directed his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, to submit a complete disclosure of all movable and immovable assets of the late businessman known to her as of June 12, 2025, the date of his death.

The order came during a hearing on a partition suit filed by Kiaan Raj and Samaira Kapur, Sunjay’s children from his second marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, who have demanded their rightful share in his estate. The siblings have also raised serious doubts regarding the authenticity of their father’s will, accusing Priya Sachdev of manipulation and concealment.

High Court seeks list of assets

While the court has sought a detailed affidavit from Priya Kapur, Justice Jyoti Singh did not impose an immediate status quo on the estate, despite repeated pleas from the plaintiffs’ counsel. The matter has been listed for further consideration with the next hearing scheduled on October 9. The judge also seeks responses from all relevant parties.

Priya Kapur, represented by senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, challenged the maintainability of the suit and argued that Kiaan and Samaira had already received substantial financial benefits from the family trust. “For all this crying and weeping that is going on, plaintiffs received Rs 1,900 crores from the trust,” Nayar told the court, referring to the Rani Kapur Trust, set up by Sunjay’s mother.

According to Nayar, assets worth nearly Rs 1,900 crore had been transferred to the two children just days before the partition suit was filed.

He continued, “The deceased’s mother (Rani Kapur) also created a trust… about five days before this suit. Under that aspect, Rs 1,900 crore worth of assets has been transmitted to the two children (Samaira and Kiaan). They’re the beneficiaries of Rs 1,900 crore… I’m the last wife of the deceased.”

During the proceedings, Nayar also referred to the long history of litigation between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur, including their highly publicised divorce in 2016.

“The plaintiff ought to have told the court there were litigations after litigations culminating in acrimonious divorce proceedings before the Supreme Court. The man she now laments over… A person has got Rs 1,900 crore worth of assets, conveyed five days prior to filing this suit, and after that, your tone changes, and you say you got nothing from the assets?!… You’ve been nowhere to be seen for the past 15 years,” Nayar argued.

However, Kiaan and Samaira’s petition accuses Priya Kapur of “conniving” with other associates to deprive them of their rightful share. Through their mother, they are seeking a one-fifth share each of all movable and immovable properties owned by their late father.

Rani Kapur’s objection to the will

To make matters more complex, Rani Kapur, Sunjay Kapur’s mother and the settlor of the family trust, has also expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of her son’s assets. Represented by senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, Rani claimed she has been excluded from key decisions concerning the estate and company affairs.

“Today I have nothing. I have seven grandchildren. I am the person who has to make sure everyone gets their share… but everyone is excluded. Everything has gone to Priya and Priya and Sunjay’s son, and plaintiffs (Samaira and Kiaan)… Today, my son leaves me on the road… I’m the purported settlor of the trust. I’ve a grievance qua this will as well,” Gaggar stated.

Sona Comstar, a leading global supplier of automotive components, has a market value of nearly Rs 30,000 crore. Around 72% of its shares are held by the public, while the remaining 28% (₹8,200 crore) is controlled by its corporate promoter, Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd.

With Priya Kapur, Kiaan, Samaira, and Rani Kapur all staking claims, the legal battle over Sunjay Kapur’s estate is expected to grow further. The next hearing on October 9 is likely to focus on asset disclosures, the validity of the will in question, among other things.
