While Aamir Khan’s movie ‘PK’ is soaring towards the Rs 500+cr box office collections all-time record, having crossed the Rs 400-cr mark in 10 days, and thereby turning the week leading into the new year virtually an one-film show and thereby sealing others’ fate as also-rans.
Last week’s release ‘Ugly’ box office collections have been negligible with a business of just Rs 1.65 crore. “Barring a few critics and a small section of the audience, nobody has been raving about it. Even the collections during the weekend have been a disaster. Monday too looks bad and there’s hardly any word-of-mouth to work for the film,” says distributor and exhibitor Akshaye Rathi.
According to Manoj Desai, even in the single screen theatre, Galaxy (Bandra, Mumbai) that has four shows of the film running, the collections haven’t been up-to-the mark.
“While ‘Ugly’ is being loved by the audience, it is not translating into good returns,” he added.
“’Ugly’ has fared below expectations at the box office with collections figures limited to lakhs throughout its opening three days. It has managed to end its first weekend with a little over Rs 1.5 crore,” adds trade analyst Vinod Mirani.
Dutta, however, begs to differ as he says that at PVR cinemas, ‘Ugly’ has seen a good counter programming option for Aamir Khan’s ‘PK’ in metro cities. “It has has 52 per cent occupancy,” he adds.
