After the successful screening at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the 1976’s movie “Manthan” by Shyam Bengali is set to rerelease in the Indian theatres on June 1 and 2, announced the Film Heritage Foundation.  

The bookings are now open for the movie across 38 cities in the country including, Delhi, Mumbai,  Anand, Rajkot, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Chandigarh.

In Cannes festival, the movie screened under the Cannes Classics segment on May 17. A restored version of the 1976 film, originally financed by 500,000 Gujarat farmers who each contributed Rs 2 to the project 48 years ago.

The news was shared on the X page of the Federal Heritage Foundation, stating, “Here’s the list of the PVR-INOX Cinemas showcasing FHF’s restoration of Shyam Benegal’s landmark film “Manthan” (1976) produced by 500,000 farmers!!”

Smita Patil in a key role, the movie depicts the story of Dr Verghees Kurien’s revolutionary milk cooperative moment, which made India one of the largest milk producers and established a brand to which today we know as Amul.  

The film was co-written by Shyam Benegal and the renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar. The title ‘Manthan’ symbolises the mobilisation of an entire village to establish a dairy cooperative.
