Narendra Modi magic wanes: With Prime Minister not really effecting any big changes in the over 6 months he has been in power and society not showing any credible changes, the common man turned against him. The expectations from him was that he would move fast on the economy, corruption, VIP culture and more. That did not happen.

Arvind Kejriwal stands tall: In his first stint, Kejriwal was very hands on. From power bills to police, he took on the establishment to put the case of the ‘aam aadmi’ front and centre in every discussion, which got prominent coverage in the media – including his sleeping on the pavement mid-winter. Won him more votes than he lost with this controversial show of AAP force.

Congress RIP: It was clear to the voters that voting for the Congress was a big waste of time and resources – both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi showed no interest in trying to convince anyone that their party was serious about serving the people of Delhi. The alternative for Delhiites was invariably not BJP and they voted en masse for Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party – this included core Congres supporters cutting across caste and religious lines.

Take the opinion poll, tell us what you think:

BJP self-goal: It was clear to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah that the Delhi voter was disenchanted with teh BJP. Seeing that something drastic neede to be done, they roped in erstwhile Arvind Kejriwal colleague in teh Anna Hazare campaigns, Kiran Bedi and made her their Delhi CM candidadate. It was clear to Delhiites that this was done because BJP powers-that-be knew BJP was heading for a loss.

Sangh Parivar: From education, politics to religion, the Sangh Parivar (RSS-linked organisations like VHP, Bajrang Dal, others) have forced extreme rightist views onto the front burner of Indian  polity. These views have been seen impacting HRD Minister Smriti Irani’s policies, from imposition of Hindi, teaching astrology and the praising of ancient Indian knowledge to the skies beyond reason. There is a concerted effort to bring pressure to bear on the Modi govt to effect RSS economic views, policies in various initiatives too. To the people of Delhi, some of the most cosmopolitan in the world, this was clearly unnacceptable. What is craved for is economic development and that is not going to be achieved with extreme rightist views and policies. The fact that people very close to top power brokers in BJP like Sakshi Maharaj, Sadhvi Prachi and others said they wanted Hindu women to birth anywhere between 5 and 10 children, the poll die was certainly cast and it had defeat written all over it for BJP.
