The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed senior IPS officer Satish Golcha as the 26th Commissioner of Delhi Police. The order, issued on Thursday, comes day after Delhi CM Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man at a public programme.

Satish Golcha is a 1992-batch IPS officer, and will replace SBK Singh who took up additional charge as Commissioner on July 31 after his predecessor Sanjay Arora’s retirement.

Golcha is currently the Director General of Tihar Jail, a charge he assumed on May 1, 2024. Golcha has previously held important positions, including Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Special Commissioner (Intelligence) in Delhi Police and Director General of Police (DGP) of Arunachal Pradesh.

He has also served as the DCP and Joint CP in Delhi Police, reported PTI.

Attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man during a public hearing at her camp office on Wednesday morning. The incident took place while she was interacting with citizens as part of her weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’. According to BJP leaders, the man suddenly entered the premises, shouted, slapped the Chief Minister and reportedly hurled abuses at her before a serious scuffle broke out.

He was later identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya of Gujarat’s Rajkot. He was immediately taken into custody by the Delhi Police and multiple charges have been invoked against him including the ‘attempt to murder’.

Witnesses stated that Sakariya introduced himself to CM, handed over a document, shouted, and then allegedly slapped the CM, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses.

‘Such attacks…’: Rekha Gupta responds

The Delhi CM took to X later in the evening and said that such attacks cannot deter her spirit and resolve to serve the people of Delhi. “The attack on me during this morning’s public hearing was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people,” she said.

Gupta said she was in shock after this attack, but assured that she was feeling better. “I request all my well-wishers not to trouble themselves by coming to meet me. I will soon be seen working among you again,” she added.

“Such attacks can never break my spirit or my resolve to serve the people. Now, I will be among you with even more energy and dedication than before,” the Delhi CM further said, adding that public hearings and the resolution of people’s problems will continue with the same seriousness and commitment as before.
