In a shocking incident on Monday, October 6, a senior advocate attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court. Security personnel quickly overpowered the lawyer and removed him from Court no. 1. Fortunately, the shoe fell short of the CJI. The accused has been identified as Rakesh Kishore.
“These things do not affect me,” the CJI said after the incident, continuing with the court proceedings unfazed. As Kishore was being taken away, he reportedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge (will not tolerate insult to Sanatan).”
Who Is Rakesh Kishore?
Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old Supreme Court lawyer, reportedly had a proximity card, which is provided to lawyers and clerks in the apex court. His background and long association with the court make the incident all the more surprising, according to reports from The Indian Express.
Why did try to Hurl to shoe
The exact reason behind Kishore’s act remains unclear. However, sources indicate that he was upset over a remark made by CJI Gavai during a hearing on September 16 concerning a petition on a mutilated idol.
The CJI had told the petitioner, “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site, and ASI needs to give permission etc. Sorry,” while dismissing the case. The comments had sparked outrage, although the CJI later clarified that he respected all religions.
