Arindam Bagchi, the current MEA spokesperson, has been announced as India’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) and other international organisations in Geneva. He has been the spokesperson of External Affairs Ministry since March 2021. During his tenure he served the country in critical developments like eastern Ladakh border row and COVID-19 pandemic.

On Monday, the Ministry announced in a statement that, “Arindam Bagchi (IFS:1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador/Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva.” It adds, “He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

Here’s all you need to know:

  • Before the Geneva assignment, Bagchi served as ambassador to Croatia from October 2018 till June 2020, which currently is held by Raj Kumar Srivastava. Later, he also served the Prime Minister’s Office as a director.
  • As the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, where he handled relations with the UN, the Americas, and Russia, Bagchi has extensive expertise in global diplomacy. He previously worked at India’s permanent mission to the UN in New York, where he handled economic and development issues.
  • Arindam Bagchi is an IFS (Indian Foreign Service) officer of batch 1995 who has got his degree from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
  • According to a PTI report, four senior diplomats, including K Nandini Singla, the High Commissioner to Mauritius, and Nagaraj Naidu Kakanur, Joint Secretary for G20, are under consideration for the role of MEA spokesperson.
