Weather update: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Supaul. Issuing a red alert for the district in Bihar, several other regions like Bhagalpur, Mahbubani, and Kishanganj, among others, are under an orange alert warning.

Five major states in India, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal are set to receive very heavy rain. Furthermore, Kachchh, Valsad, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg have been issued an orange alert along the western coast.

Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a Senior Scientist at the IMD’s Shimla Centre, told ANI that the state has experienced widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, with some areas recording intense precipitation.

“Almost all regions in Himachal Pradesh received rainfall during the past 24 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded in Palampur at 76 mm, followed by Banjar at 75 mm. Moderate rainfall of around 55 mm was recorded in Sirmaur. People should stay away from rivers and streams; landslide risk remains high,” Sharma said.

IMD predicts

Heavy rainfall is also expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh between June 28 and July 2; West Rajasthan on June 28, July 3, and 4. East Rajasthan is set to receive showers from July 1 to 4. Very heavy rains are in the forecast for Himachal Pradesh on June 29 and 30, in Uttarakhand from June 28 to July 2. The Mayurbhanj district of Odisha was lashed with torrential rains and is currently facing waterlogging issues.

Monsoon mayhem

The warnings come after a severe cloudburst in Uttarakhand near Paligad-Silai Band in Tehsil Barkot of Uttarkashi district on June 28. Around nine road construction labourers are feared to have been swept away, and rescue operations are underway.

In a recent update, considering the heavy spell of rainfall in Uttarakhand, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours keeping in the mind the safety of devotees.
