The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its latest weather bulletin has informed that there will be a fresh spell of heatwave conditions over Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan from May 16th. Eastern India regions namely Odisha, Delhi, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal will too experience heatwave conditions from May 18th onwards.

As per the IMD release, isolated heavy rainfall is likely along with lighting, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over Kerala, Mahe, Coastal south Interior Karnataka, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Karaikal till May 20th.

Orange alert & Heatwave conditions for THESE states:

The weather regulator has issued an orange alert for Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Severe heatwave conditions are likely to grip isolated regions of South Haryana and Punjab from May 18th and 19th whereas in some parts of West Rajasthan from May 17th to May 19th. The report also stated that heatwave conditions are expected to prevail over Delhi, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal from May 18th and will continue till May 19th.

Monsoon onset over Kerala:

The southwest monsoon is predicted to commence over Kerala from May 31.”This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days,” the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday. “This is not early; it’s close to the normal date,” IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

IMD’s prediction for heavy rainfall:

The release has alerted that there is a cyclonic circulation lying over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and nearby regions of south Sri Lanka and because of this there is a chance of heavy rainfall in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, South Interior Karnataka from May 16th to May 19th.  It also added that there may be isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh during the same period. On the other hand, Meghalaya and Assam will also experience it from May 17th to May 19th.
