As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate, playback singer Adnan Sami shared an eye-opening conversation with a group of Pakistani boys he recently met in Baku, Azerbaijan. The boys, who expressed regret about their country’s situation, told Sami they were grateful he left Pakistan “in good time” and wished they could follow suit by renouncing their Pakistani identities.
The boys, who are said to harbor deep resentment against the Pakistan Army, openly shared their disdain, claiming that the army had “destroyed their country.” Sami, who holds Indian citizenship after previously having a Pakistani passport, recounted this conversation on social media, saying, “Met some very sweet Pakistani boys while walking on the beautiful streets of Baku… They said, ‘Sir, you are very lucky… You left Pakistan in good time… We also want to change our citizenship… WE HATE OUR ARMY… They have destroyed our country!!’ I replied, ‘I knew this long ago!’”

Sami, who has had a long association with both India and Pakistan, moved to India in 2001 with a Pakistani passport and went on to live there for 15 years. In 2016, he was granted Indian citizenship, after initiating the process following the expiration of his Pakistani passport in 2013.
The renowned singer, famous for songs like “Lift Karade” and numerous Bollywood hits, also responded to a recent question from a Pakistani national who asked what his next destination would be if war broke out between India and Pakistan. Sami replied, “I’m extremely happy in India,” reaffirming his commitment to his adopted country.
In 2021, Sami was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his significant contributions to the arts. However, his Indian nationality has often been a point of contention, especially among some Pakistani citizens who have criticized him online. This backlash intensified following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, after which the Indian government ordered those holding Pakistani visas to leave the country.
