Tensions flared up in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur area where a mob attacked a religious tomb.  According to reports, the mob included members of Hindu organisations reportedly climbing onto the tomb claiming it is built on a temple and began vandalising it.

Several videos that have surfaced on social media showed people with covered faces hitting the tomb. A police force is also seen deployed in the area.

Reason behind the mob attack

One of the videos on social media showed people carrying saffron flags and chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ around the tomb. The reason behind the mob attack is not clear at the time of writing this report. However, India Today reported that the district president of the BJP Mukhlal Pal alleged that the tomb of Nawab Abdus Samad in Fatehpur’s Sadar tehsil area, is built over a temple.

Pal claimed it was instead a thousand-year-old temple of Thakur ji and Lord Shiva. Following his claim, a mob entered the tomb premises and vandalised the area outside the mausoleum.

Bajrang Dal, VHP to offer prayers at site

Fatehpur District co-convenor of Bajrang Dal Dharmendra Singh told ANI that they will offer prayers at the site later today. “We will offer prayers here at noon. The administration will not be able to stop us. In the Hindu religion, no one can take away our right to offer prayers. It is our temple which they are referring to as a tomb…” he told the news agency.

According to the India Today report, state Vice President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Virendra Pandey has also made similar claims on the site. “There are religious symbols, Parikrama Marg, and a temple well [at the site of tomb],” the report quoted Pandey as saying. He further said, “We want it cleaned for Janmashtami celebrations on August 16. We had informed the administration ten days ago, but they are not taking it seriously.”

Law and order situation in the area

District Magistrate Ravindra Singh told reporters that the law and order situation in Abu Nagar area is currently under control. “Both the sides were made to understand the facts. They were assured that law and order would be maintained. We have to ensure that there is no spread of rumours. The situation is peaceful,” Singh said.
