List of Upcoming Elections in India: As the Lok Sabha elections approach, six states will witness assembly elections in 2024, while five states are gearing up for elections in 2023. Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Karnataka have already successfully held elections this year. Furthermore, assembly elections are scheduled for the second half of 2023 in Mizoram, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.
Mizoram Election 2023: Tenure (December 18, 2018 – December 17, 2023)
The Mizoram assembly election for 2023 is expected to take place later this year in November-December 2023. The legislative assembly consists of 40 members, with a majority requiring 21 seats. In the previous assembly elections held in November 2018, the Mizo National Front secured 26 seats, leading to the election of Zoramthama as the chief minister. This marked the first time that Congress was not in power in any of the northeastern states.

Chhattisgarh Elections 2023: Tenure (January 4, 2019 – January 3, 2024)
The Chhattisgarh Assembly election for 2023 is expected to be held in November this year. The Legislative Assembly comprises 90 members, representing 36 districts. In the previous Legislative Assembly elections held in November 2018, the Indian National Congress (INC) won 68 seats against the ruling BJP. Bhupesh Baghel of the Congress assumed office as the third Chief Minister of the state on December 17.
Madhya Pradesh Elections 2023: Tenure (January 7, 2019 – January 6, 2024)
Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections 2023 are slated to take place in or around November. A total of 230 constituencies will elect members. In the previous election held in 2018, Congress emerged as the single-largest party with 114 seats. With support from one MLA from the Samajwadi Party, two MLAs from the BSP, and four Independent MLAs, Congress secured a majority and formed the government, with Kamal Nath as the CM. However, in 2020, 22 Congress MLAs loyal to Jyotiraditya Scindia defected to the BJP. Consequently, Shivraj Singh Chouhan from the BJP reassumed the position of CM on March 23, 2020.

Rajasthan Elections 2023: Tenure (January 15, 2019 – January 14, 2024)
The Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2023 are expected to be held in December this year. The state’s Legislative Assembly comprises 200 members, with 101 seats needed for a majority. In the previous elections held in 2018, the Indian National Congress emerged as the single largest party with 100 seats, just one seat short of a majority. The Bharatiya Janata Party won 73 seats, a significant decrease from the previous election when it secured an absolute majority of 163 seats. INC formed the government in coalition with the Bahujan Samaj Party, and the support of Independent MLAs Ashok Gehlot was appointed as the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

Telangana Elections 2023: Tenure (January 17, 2019 – January 16, 2024)
The Telangana Assembly election for 2023 is expected to be held in or before December 2023. The state Legislative Assembly consists of 119 members, all of whom will be elected. In the December 2018 assembly elections, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, later renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi, emerged victorious and formed the state government. K. Chandrashekar Rao assumed office as the Chief Minister for the second time.
Andhra Pradesh Elections 2024: Tenure (June 12, 2019 – June 11, 2024)
The Andhra Pradesh election is expected to take place before June 2024 to elect all 175 members of the state’s legislative assembly. In the previous Andhra Pradesh elections held in April 2019, the YSRCP bagged 151 of the 175 seats, while the Telugu Desam Party bagged 23. After the election, the YSR Congress Party formed the state government, with Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy becoming the Chief Minister.
Arunachal Pradesh Elections 2024: Tenure (June 3, 2019 – June 2, 2024)
The Arunachal Pradesh assembly election is expected to be held in or before April 2024. In the previous assembly elections held in April 2019, the BJP bagged 41 of the 60 seats in the state Assembly, followed by JD(U) 7, NDEP 5 and Congress 4. Following the election, the Bharatiya Janata Party formed the state government, with Pema Khandu as the Chief Minister.
Odisha Elections 2024: Tenure (June 25, 2019 – June 24, 2024)
The Odisha Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held on or before June 2024 to elect all 147 members of the state assembly. The previous assembly elections were conducted in April 2019. The Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal bagged 112 seats, followed by BJP at 23 and Congress at 9. After the election, the Biju Janata Dal formed the state government, with Naveen Patnaik’s return as the Chief Minister.
Sikkim Elections 2024: Tenure (June 3, 2019 – June 2, 2024)
The Sikkim Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held on or before April 2024 to elect the 32 members of the 10th Legislative Assembly. In the previous assembly elections held in April 2019, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha won 17 seats followed by the Sikkim Democratic Front at 14 seats. After the election, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha formed the state government, with Prem Singh Tamang becoming the Chief Minister.
Haryana Elections 2024: Tenure (November 4, 2019 – November 3, 2024)
The Haryana Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held on or before October 2024 to elect all 90 members of the state’s Legislative Assembly. The previous Assembly elections took place in October 2019 and saw the BJP emerge as the single-largest party with 40 seats. The party formed the government in a post-poll alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (10 seats) and seven Independent MLAs. The Congress finished second with 31 seats while regional satrap INLD could only bag 1 seat. BJP’s Manohar Lal Khattar was appointed as the Chief Minister while Dushyant Chautala of the JJP took over as his deputy.
Maharashtra Elections 2024: Tenure (November 27, 2019 – November 26, 2024)
The next Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held or before October 2024 to elect all 288 members of the state’s Legislative Assembly. The previous Assembly elections were held in October 2019. While the NDA bloc of the Bharatiya Janata Party (105 seats) and the Shiv Sena (56) secured a clear majority to form the government, Shiv Sena left the alliance due to internal conflict. Shiv Sena then formed a new alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party and Indian National Congress called MVA, resulting in Uddhav Thackeray becoming the Chief Minister. However, the government fell following the rebellion by the Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde and MLAs loyal to him. Shinde later split the Shiv Sena into two and formed a government with the BJP.
