Hours after the demise of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari due to cardiac arrest in a Uttar Pradesh prison, the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Banda ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter.

According to PTI, the court instructed an additional CJM to lead the investigation into Ansari’s death and deliver the findings within a month.

Earlier in the day Umar Ansari, the son of Mukhtar Ansari, claimed that his father had been intentionally poisoned slowly while in jail. Addressing reporters, Umar Ansari stated, “My father had told us he was being subjected to slow poisoning,” Umar Ansari told reporters, adding that the entire country knows about it now.

Afzal Ansari, the brother of Mukhtar Ansari and the current MP from Ghazipur, provided details to the media on Tuesday after visiting him in the hospital. He stated, “The medical college has formed a team and treatment is ongoing. He is in the ICU and I met him for five minutes. He is conscious.”

Afzal relayed that Mukhtar Ansari informed him about being administered a poisonous substance in his food, which had occurred for the second time, with the previous incident happening 40 days earlier.

“I am thankful for it… If the hospital in Banda can’t provide proper treatment, then he should be referred in time.” he added.

Meanwhile, heightened security measures have been implemented across several districts of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Prashant Kumar confirmed that security personnel have been put on alert, with prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC enforced statewide.Teams comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in collaboration with local police forces have been deployed in Banda, Mau, Ghazipur, and Varanasi, as PTI reported.

In regards to Mukhtar Ansari’s demise, his son Umar Ansari stated their intention to transport his body to Ghazipur for burial following the postmortem examination. The police have already devised a route plan to ensure the safe transit of the body via road from Banda to Ghazipur, covering a distance of approximately 380 kilometres.

Mukhtar Ansari, aged 60 and convicted in eight cases over the past two years, had been incarcerated in Banda jail. A five-time MLA from Mau constituency in eastern Uttar Pradesh, he had a lengthy criminal record, with a total of 65 cases registered against him across various police stations in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

His most recent conviction occurred on March 13, when the Varanasi MP/MLA court sentenced him to life imprisonment for using forged documents to obtain an arms license in 1990. This marked the eighth case in which Ansari had been convicted and sentenced by a Uttar Pradesh court within the past two years.
