7 Indian institutions ranked in the Top 100 in QS World University Asia ranking, according to the data released on Tuesday, November 4. As the impressive figures caught Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attention, he took to his official X account to praise the country’s progressing rise in the global education sector.

“Glad to see a record increase in the number of Indian universities in the QS Asia University Rankings over the last decade,” he wrote on the social media platform Tuesday night. He went on to affirm that the Indian government was wholeheartedly committed to ensuring “quality education for our youth, with a focus on research and innovation.” Moreover, he even opened up about how more educational institution were being enabled in the country by building institutional capacities in the sector.
In his post, PM Modi also plugged the LinkedIn shout-out shared by Matteo Quacuarelli, the London-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds’ Vice President, Strategy & Analytics. “India’s remarkable rise in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026 reflects a decade of transformation in research productivity, innovation, and institutional capacity,” he highlighted therein.
“Over the past ten years, India’s representation in the rankings has increased tenfold, demonstrating the country’s growing contribution to Asia’s higher education landscape.” Quacquarelli futher took note of how it had been five years since India launched the National Education Policy (NEP), and its impact had evidently reflected itself in the nation’s standing on the Asian university rankings table.
Hailing India as a “research hub,” the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026 registered that the country had witnessed a 1,125% increase in this domain, especially since the roster had grown including 24 universities in 2016 to 294 in 2026. “India dominates Paper per Faculty indicator, with 5 universities ranked among Asia’s top 10 and 28 among the top 50,” the survey foregrounds.
Top-ranking Indian universities in the Asia rankings
Although top-ranked Indian universities have witnessed a slump on the latest rankings, with certain IITs dropping from their previous positions, 7 IITs were still featured in the top 150. Despite the fall, 5 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and Delhi University, have settled in the Asia’s Top 100 universities roster.
“Seven Indian institutions rank in the top 100 in QS World University Asia rankings, 20 in the top 200 and 66 in the top 500,” QS said in a statement. Although at #59 on this particular Asian table, IIT-Delhi was declared the best Indian institute for the fifth year in a row.
