Strong tremors were felt in Kolkata on Friday after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit Narsingdi area in Bangladesh. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the magnitude of the quake was first recorded as 5.7 at a depth of 10 km (6 miles). In the IT sector of Saltlake city, people were seen outside their offices due to sudden jolt.
Reports said tremors were also felt in some northeastern states, however, no report of casualty has come so far. The USGS said the earthquake’s epicenter was in the city of Narsingdi, about 40 km (25 miles) from Dhaka, the capital.
Residents in Dhaka also rushed out of their homes as buildings shook and some makeshift structures collapsed, Reuters reported citing witnesses.

DD News reported citing Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir that the epicentre was in Madhabdi under Narsingdi district, and that the tremors were felt strongly for a few seconds, causing high-rise buildings to sway.
