In response to the recent protests, Delhi Ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, Mayor Shelly Oberoi, and AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak held a meeting today with UPSC aspirants following a tragic incident at an Old Rajinder Nagar coaching centre. On Saturday evening, three students lost their lives after the basement of a building housing the coaching centre flooded due to heavy rains.
After the meeting, Atishi informed ANI, “We convened a meeting with numerous students from major coaching hubs across Delhi, including Rajinder Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, and Nehru Vihar. Senior officers from various departments of the Delhi government, including education, MCD, law, and fire departments, were also present.” She continued, “We listened to the students’ concerns and sought their feedback on potential regulations. Issues related to the infrastructure and fees of coaching institutes were prominently raised.”
Atishi further noted that students voiced complaints about the lack of study spaces. “Students mentioned that illegally operating libraries in basements have been sealed, leaving them without places to study. We assured them that we will find solutions to both their short-term and long-term problems.”
The ministers also discussed the need for regulatory legislation for coaching institutes. “Many students requested our presence at the protest site, and we are open to engaging with them directly. We are committed to drafting a law to regulate coaching institutes, and UPSC aspirants and students will be involved in this process,” Atishi added.
Saurabh Bhardwaj, who was also present at the meeting, told ANI, “The students shared their views, and the Delhi government has pledged to introduce legislation to regulate coaching institutes similarly to how schools are regulated.”
