A Dalit minor girl was allegedly raped by a police sub-inspector in Rajasthan’s Dausa district on Friday afternoon, sparking massive protest, reports The Indian Express.
Protestors gheraoed the police station and roughed up the accused police personnel.
The accused has been identified as 54-year-old Bhupendra Singh, and he has been arrested. He was posted on election duty when the alleged incident took place.
Additional SP Bajrang Singh said on Saturday said that the incident took place on Friday afternoon after he had completed his duty. He was staying at a rented place and was posted on election duty.
The ASP added that the parents of minor girl, who is around 4-5 years of age, suspected something untoward when she came to them crying, and with a Rs 50 note in her hand. Acting upon information, Singh was identified as the accused.
Dausa Superintendent of Police Vandita Rana said an FIR has been registered against the accused under sections of the Indian Penal Code, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on a complaint by the girl’s parents.
“The case is being investigated by an additional SP-rank officer. The statement of the victim girl has been recorded and further action is being taken,” she added, as quoted by PTI.
Following the incident, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena reached the spot and sat on a dharna, along with his supporters, and took a dig at the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government over the incident.
The opposition BJP alleged that while the Centre believes in “beti bachao”, the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led dispensation in Rajasthan stands for “rapists bachao”.Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra condemned the incident, saying it brings shame to the entire society, and instructed Director General of Police Umesh Mishra to take strict action in the case.
