Sacked Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam has claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had vowed to overturn the decision of the Supreme Court in the Ayodhya Ramjanmbhoomi case on the lines of the Rajiv Gandhi-led government’s actions following the Shah Bano judgment.
Speaking to ANI, Krishnam claimed that Rahul made this remark in the presence of one America-based counsel of the party. “I have spent more than 32 years in the Congress and when the Ram Mandir decision came, Rahul Gandhi in a meeting with his close aides said that after the Congress govt is formed, they will form a superpower commission and will overturn the Ram Mandir decision just like Rajiv Gandhi overturned the Shah Bano decision,” ANI quoted him as saying.
The Supreme Court in its 1985 verdict had ruled in favour of Shah Bano, an Indore-based Muslim woman, granting her maintenance from her husband after divorce. The then Congress government had overturned the judgment through an Act in Parliament.
In a landmark ruling on November 9, 2019, the top court awarded the title of the disputed land to the deity, Shri Ram Virajman, and directed Uttar Pradesh to grant the Sunni Waqf Board five acres in a “prominent” location in Ayodhya for the construction of a mosque. The disputed land was handed over to a trust to build the Ram Janmabhoomi temple at the site.
Krishnam’s attack comes barely days after he claimed that the Congress was heading towards a vertical split into factions of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“The way Rahul Gandhi has left Amethi, Congress party workers’ morale is down. Priyanka Gandhi not contesting the election, this is now taking the shape of a volcano in the hearts of her supporters that will erupt after June 4. Congress will again be split into two factions, one of Rahul Gandhi and the other of Priyanka Gandhi… I think Rahul Gandhi should contest from Rawalpindi instead of Raebareli, as his popularity and demand are increasing in Pakistan,” Krishnam had said last week.
