PM Modi In Manipur Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Manipur on Saturday, September 13, marking his first visit to the state since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. Prime Minister would reach violence-hit Churachandpur district around 12.30 pm from Aizawl, Mizoram. He will meet people displaced by clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, lay the foundation stone for projects worth Rs 7,300 crore, and address a gathering at the Peace Ground.
Churachandpur holds deep significance, having been among the worst-affected districts in the violence that claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands. PM Modi will also be the first Prime Minister since Rajiv Gandhi in 1988 to visit the district. Later, he will travel to Imphal, the state capital, to inaugurate projects worth Rs 1,200 crore and address another public function.
What PM Modi’s visit to Manipur means?
PM Modi’s visit holds significance with Churachandpur being a Kuki-dominated area, while Meiteis form the majority in Imphal. This balance is being read as a deliberate attempt to reach out across both communities. “The visit of the honourable Prime Minister will pave the way for peace, normalcy and accelerated growth,” Goel said, appealing to residents to participate in large numbers.
In a post on X, Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to Manipur’s development. He said the projects would include road and highway works, women’s hostels, and new institutions such as the Civil Secretariat and Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri.
Manipur violence
Since May 2023, Manipur has been plagued by intense ethnic violence between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribal groups from surrounding hills. The conflict, triggered by a contentious court order concerning Scheduled Tribe status, has claimed over 250 lives and displaced around 60,000 people. Both communities have been involved in armed clashes, looting of police armories, and attacks on homes, places of worship, and public property. Despite government efforts including curfews, military deployments, and peace talks, tensions remain high.
The crisis led to Chief Minister Biren Singh’s resignation in February 2025, with President’s Rule imposed to restore order. PM Modi’s visit aims to bring renewed focus to peace and rebuilding efforts in the region.
