Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed on Friday that he would be attending the upcoming Group of Seven summit in Canada following an invitation from Mark Carney. The development came amid mounting speculation that Ottawa had ‘uninvited’ the Indian leader after six consecutive years amid frayed diplomatic ties.
“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” he wrote on X.
India-Canada ties had turned frosty under the Justin Trudeau government that preceded Carney over several issues — including the activities of Khalistani separatists in the country. The rift began in September 2023 after the former PM claimed his government was looking into “credible allegations” that linked India to the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Canadian Sikh separatist leader — a designated terrorist in India —had been gunned down by unknown assailants in British Columbia earlier that year.
