In a special joint sitting of Parliament, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation that is celebrating 75 years of India’s Constitution on Tuesday.
The ceremony, held at Samvidhan Sadan, began with President Murmu recalling the significant contributions of the 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly who played a pivotal role in framing the Constitution.

During her speech, Murmu highlighted the government’s efforts in recent years to uplift all sections of society, particularly the weaker sections. She stated, “In the last few years, the government has taken several steps for the welfare of all sections of society, especially the weaker sections. The poor are getting their own houses and world-class infrastructure is being developed in the country…”
The President also stressed the importance of the Constitution as a “living and progressive document” that has helped India achieve social justice and inclusive development. “Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through our Constitution, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development…” she added.
President Murmu also released a commemorative postage stamp to mark 75 years of the Indian Constitution.
Murmu further emphasised the impact of recent legislative measures, such as the law on women’s reservation, which she described as heralding a “new era of women empowerment in our democracy.”
The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and other dignitaries including leaders of opposition parties such as Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi stated, “Happy Constitution Day to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution.”
Constitution Day of India, or Samvidhan Divas, is observed annually on November 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. The Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, establishing India as a sovereign, democratic republic.
This day aims to celebrate the values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution. Dr. B R Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, is widely revered as the chief architect of the Constitution.
