The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken action against YouTuber and digital influencer Elvish Yadav for his controversial remarks about actress and Bigg Boss 18 contestant Chum Darang. The commission has issued a summons, requiring Yadav to appear before them on February 17 to address the matter.
The controversy erupted after Yadav, during a podcast, made derogatory and racially insensitive comments about Darang. He mocked her name, questioned her nationality, and ridiculed her role in the critically acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi. His remarks quickly went viral, sparking widespread backlash across social media.
In his podcast, Yadav stated, “Karan Veer must have had COVID because who would even like Chum? Who has such terrible taste? And her name itself sounds obscene… Her name is Chum, and she worked in Gangubai Kathiawadi.”
Chum Darang’s response
Reacting to the controversy, Darang strongly condemned Yadav’s comments, calling them disrespectful and harmful. She emphasised that humour should not be an excuse for belittling someone’s identity and achievements. “Mocking someone’s name and ethnicity is not entertainment,” she wrote in a statement.
Yadav addressed the issue in a vlog, stating that he reviewed social media discussions but was unsure if he had made racist remarks. However, he later decided to remove the controversial portion from his podcast, saying, “If anyone felt offended, I have removed that section.”
