The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for Maharashtra as Cyclone ‘Shakti’ forms over the Arabian Sea. The cyclone is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and rough sea conditions in the coming days. Authorities have activated disaster management systems and started preparing evacuation plans.
The IMD has put Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg on high to moderate alert until 7 October. Winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, have already been recorded along the northern Maharashtra coast. The department has also warned that wind speeds could increase as the cyclone strengthens.
Sea conditions are already dangerous along the northern Maharashtra coast and are likely to remain so until at least October 5. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out and coastal residents, especially in low-lying areas, have been warned about possible tidal surges and waterlogging.
Heavy rainfall expected across Maharashtra
Apart from coastal regions, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several interior areas. East Vidarbha and Marathwada are expected to see intense showers, while North Konkan could face flooding in low-lying zones.
The rains may cause road blockages, disrupt daily life, and damage standing crops.
Maharashtra government steps up preparations
The state government has directed district administrations to be fully prepared for emergencies. Disaster management systems have been activated, evacuation shelters are being readied and coordination with police, fire brigades and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been ensured. Medical facilities have also been asked to remain on standby.
Fishermen have been strictly advised not to go to sea and boats already out have been told to return immediately. Coastal communities have been urged to stock up on essentials, avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during heavy rain, and follow official advisories closely.
Possible disruptions in Mumbai and other cities
For Mumbai and nearby cities, Cyclone ‘Shakti’ could bring heavy downpours that may disrupt transport, cause waterlogging, and affect daily routines. Citizens have been urged to plan travel carefully and stay alert to municipal warnings about flooding or road closures.
While the cyclone’s exact path will become clearer in the coming days, officials stress the importance of preparedness. With the risk of heavy rains, strong winds, and rough seas, both citizens and local authorities have been urged to remain cautious and ready to face emergencies.
