At least 14 people were killed and 20 others injured when a pick-up vehicle overturned and fell into a deep valley in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Thursday, reports PTI.
The accident took place near Badjhar Ghat at around 1.30 AM. According to police, the driver of the vehicle lost control while negotiating a blind turn, leading to the fall into a 40-50 feet valley.
While 14 people, including seven men, six women and a minor boy, died on the spot, 20 others were injured, police said. The injured were rushed to the Shahpura Community Health Centre, and six of them are in critical condition.
Sub Divisional Officer of Police Mukesh Avindra said that the victims were returning to Amhai Devri from Masurghugri village in the district’s Shahpura block after taking part in a programme.
Expressing grief over the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister announced ex-gratia of Rs four lakh each to the kin of the deceased people.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath too expressed their condolences.
In a post on X in Hindi, the President wrote, “News of road accident in Dindori district is extremely painful. I express my condolences to the bereaved family members. I pray that all the people injured in this accident get well soon.”
