A second-year medical student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead at her home in the ESI Hospital Quarters in Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The student, identified as Ivy Prasad, was discovered by her mother, a doctor at the local ESI hospital after repeated calls to her went unanswered.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and authorities are awaiting the report to determine the exact cause of death.

No Suicide Note Found

According to police sources, the student was allegedly found hanging in her room. Despite efforts to save her, she was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, adding to the mystery surrounding her death. The authorities are probing whether she was struggling with depression, as suggested by initial reports.

As per reports, Ivy Prasad lived with her mother in Kamarhati, while her father, a senior official at a nationalised bank, resides in Mumbai. The tragedy has left her family in shock, and further inquiries are being conducted to understand the circumstances leading to her death.

This is not the first tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College. On August 9 last year, the body of a post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the hospital’s seminar room. The latest case has once again raised concerns about mental health issues among medical students and the pressure they face.

The incident highlights the growing concerns over stress and mental health struggles faced by medical students. Authorities and institutions have been urged to provide better mental health support systems to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The police investigation is ongoing; further details are expected once the post-mortem report is released.
