Two assistant commissioners of police and an inspector were suspended in connection with the vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14 and the early hours of August 15, for alleged negligence while on duty, officials said.

According to The Indian Express report, a departmental inquiry has been initiated against Assistant Commissioners Shakir Uddin Sardar and Ramesh Shah Chowdhury, as well as Inspector Rakesh Minz.

In the early hours of August 15, a group of people stormed the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, vandalizing the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store. The violence took place during midnight protests by women across West Bengal, sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at the hospital.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Kolkata Police, believed to be a close associate of the accused in the alleged rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, appeared before the CBI on Tuesday for questioning.

ASI Anoop Dutt was questioned about his relationship with accused Sanjay Roy and his knowledge of the events on the night of the incident. Roy was also interrogated about his interactions with the victim, among other matters. The CBI is expected to question Roy’s relatives in the coming days, sources said.

Additionally, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, appeared before the CBI for the fifth consecutive day on Tuesday. He faced questions regarding inconsistencies in his statements and was also asked about the demolition of an adjacent portion of a seminar room and the repair work that began during the investigation. Allegations of dereliction of duty and attempts to cover up the incident have been made against Ghosh.

On Wednesday, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers continued to question Dr. Sandeep Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day regarding the alleged rape and murder of a young doctor during her night shift at the hospital. According to PTI, Ghosh may also undergo a polygraph test. “We need to further verify Ghosh’s answers, as there have been discrepancies in some of his responses,” an official said.
