Supreme Court hearing on Kolkata rape and murder case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday presented its status report to the Supreme Court concerning the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The report has reportedly revealed that the crime scene might have been tampered with. Additionally, it also highlighted inconsistencies in the West Bengal Police’s handling of the case, initially informing the victim’s parents that it was a suicide before later revising their statement to classify it as a murder.

The report has identified another key issue: a notable delay between when the body was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on the morning of August 9 and when the local police were notified about the incident. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the West Bengal government, stated that the post-mortem was performed between 6:10 pm and 7:00 pm. Justice J.B. Pardiwala expressed astonishment, remarking that it is surprising that the post-mortem occurred before the registration of the unnatural death.

The Supreme Court questioned whether the case was initially considered an unnatural death when the police sent the victim’s body for examination and, if it was not deemed unnatural, why the post-mortem was conducted at all. This marks the second hearing related to the case before this bench, drawing significant attention to the proceedings. According to media reports,

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud noted during the hearing that the General Diary entry at the police station records a call from RG Kar Hospital at 10:10 am, reporting that a woman was found “unconscious” in the seminar room. He emphasized that the case diary clearly indicates that the crime scene was not secured until after the post-mortem had been completed.
