Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run Kar Medical College and Hospital. The senior officer confirmed the arrest on Saturday (August 10).
The arrested individual, an outsider with unrestricted access to various hospital departments, is believed to be directly involved in the crime. “We have arrested one person whose activities are highly suspicious, and he appears to be directly linked to the assault and murder,” news agency PTI quoted a police officer as saying.
The arrest followed the discovery of a torn piece of a Bluetooth earphone that led authorities to the suspect. According to a police source, other postgraduate trainees (PGTs) and female doctors identified the suspect through CCTV footage from different areas of the hospital.
Police have noted inconsistencies in the suspect’s statements during interrogation. Investigators are now working to determine if there were any accomplices and are considering conducting medical examinations on the suspect.
On Friday night, police also questioned two intern doctors as part of their investigation into the case.
The victim, a second-year postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital. Her body, discovered semi-nude, showed signs of injury. Her father has alleged that she was raped and murdered, and expressed concerns that efforts are being made to conceal the truth.
The preliminary autopsy report has confirmed that the woman experienced sexual abuse before her death.
