A local leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was hacked to death by his neighbour during a temple festival in Koyilandy situated in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, as PTI reported.

The incident took place on Thursday night when the victim, PV Satyanathan(60) , was present at the Cheriyapuram temple when he was attacked by alleged behaviour Abhilash (35) with a sharp tool, identified as an axe, where the festival was ongoing.

According to preliminary reports, the murder took place due to personal rivalry. A case under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 302, has been registered, as per PTI.

P Mohanan, the CPI(M) district secretary, stated that the assailant attacked the local leader with an axe. Following the attack, the leader sustained severe injuries to his back and neck. He was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed during the treatment.

Later, the accused Abhilash surrendered himself at the police station. He was taken into custody, the police added.

In response to the leader’s death, a bandh has been declared in Koyilandy on Friday as a form of protest, according to P Mohanan. PV Sathyanathan was serving as the CPI(M) Koyilandy central local committee secretary.
