The Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 men convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, stating that the prosecution had “utterly failed” to prove their involvement.
In 2015, a trial court had sentenced five people to death and handed life terms to seven others for their alleged roles in the seven coordinated blasts that killed over 180 people in Mumbai.
However, a special bench of the Bombay High Court, comprising Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak, has now ruled that the prosecution “utterly failed in establishing the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The court ordered that the accused be released immediately unless they are wanted in any other cases.
On July 11, 2006, seven blasts targeted Mumbai local trains along the western line, resulting in over 180 deaths and numerous injuries.
