Two individuals, including a journalist, have been arrested for allegedly making controversial comments on social media about the Maha Kumbh and Hindu deities, according to a PTI report. These arrests came after their posts sparked anger among some members of the Hindu community, prompting authorities to increase social media monitoring.
Kamran Alvi, who describes himself as a journalist with over 9,000 Facebook followers, was the first to be arrested. He posted a video related to the Maha Kumbh, which offended the sentiments of some individuals. City Kotwali SHO Alok Mani Tripathi confirmed to PTI that Alvi was arrested under Section 299 of the BNS Act. This section pertains to deliberate and malicious acts intended to insult the religious feelings of any community. Alvi is expected to appear in court in connection with the charges.
The second arrest was of Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Boja village near Jaidpur. Kumar made objectionable comments on social media about Hindu deities and the Maha Kumbh. The police have filed a case against him as well.
The Maha Kumbh, one of the most significant Hindu religious events, began on January 13 in Prayagraj. It is scheduled to continue until February 26, attracting millions of devotees. The event is being held after 12 years, and its importance makes it a sensitive subject for many.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter and are looking into others who may have shared or circulated the controversial video. The case highlights the increasing tension around religious sentiments on social media and the need for careful handling of sensitive topics in the digital age.
