India-Pakistan tension: Following calls for a boycott by tourism and business bodies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has suspended its academic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkey’s Inonu University, citing national security concerns. The decision, announced on Wednesday, confirms that the MoU signed in February 2025 is no longer in effect.

Why did JNU suspend the MoU

The MoU between JNU and Inonu University, which was set for a three-year duration, aimed to facilitate academic collaboration through faculty and student exchange programs. According to a senior JNU official, the agreement also had provisions for joint research initiatives, fostering cross-cultural academic exchanges. However, the university has now put the partnership on hold, citing national security issues, without elaborating further on the specifics of the decision.

The academic tie-up between the two universities was part of an ongoing effort to strengthen international academic relations and promote cultural exchange. Located in Malatya, Turkey, Inonu University sought to collaborate with JNU to enhance research opportunities and create a platform for Indian and Turkish students and faculty members to work together.

India-Turkey relations

The suspension of the MoU comes at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan. On May 10, 2025, the two countries reached an agreement to halt military actions following several days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes. This fragile peace agreement adds further strain to already sensitive relations in the region.

Turkey’s stance in supporting Pakistan, especially in condemning India’s military actions against terror camps in Pakistan, has further complicated diplomatic ties. The Turkish government’s support for Pakistan has sparked calls for a boycott of Turkish goods and tourism within India, as nationalist sentiments rise across the country.

Impact on trade and tourism

In addition to the suspension of the MoU, India’s trade relations with Turkey are expected to face challenges. Several travel and tourism platforms, including EaseMyTrip and Ixigo, have issued advisories against traveling to Turkey and Pakistan, urging citizens to reconsider visits to these countries in light of the recent geopolitical developments.
