The five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Ansari, has reportedly died in jail on Thursday. Ansari has been brought back from a government hospital after facing health issues.
The 60-year-old politician-turned-gangster had been taken to Banda Medical College under heavy security arrangement. According to media reports, Ansari’s brother Afzal Ansari has reported poison attacks on Ansari on several occasions which led to his admission to the hospital.
“Mukhtar said that he was given poisonous a substance in food in jail. This happened for the second time. Around 40 days ago also he was given poison. And recently on March 19 of March 22, he was again given this (poison) due to which his condition is bad,” confirmed Afzal, an MP from Ghazipur.
Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from the Mau constituency, has twice represented the Bahujan Samaj Party in his electoral victories. His last participation in assembly polls was in 2017.
On March 13, Ansari received a life sentence for his involvement in a case dating back to 1990, concerning the fraudulent acquisition of an arms license. This marks the eighth conviction in the past two years for the former legislator from Uttar Pradesh.
