Responding to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s comments on the Indus Waters Treaty, actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday warned that any misadventure would be met with “BrahMos missile strikes”. Earlier on Monday, the Pakistani leader had said, “If war is waged, then… we will send a message to the Modi government that we do not retreat, we do not bow down and if you dare think about launching an attack on the Indus River, then the people of every province of Pakistan will be ready to confront you.”

Speaking to reporters, Chakraborty rebuked, “People of Pakistan don’t want war, I believe. But if such words and rhetoric continue, aur hamari khopdi sanak gayi toh phir ek ke baad ek BrahMos chalega (If we lose our minds, then one BrahMos after the other will be launched).”

Tsunami warning from Mithun

In a bizarre aside, the veteran actor added that India could respond to Pakistan’s threats over dam construction on the Indus with an unconventional move. “We will build a dam where 140 crore of our people will pee in it. Then we will open the dam, it will lead to a tsunami in Pakistan,” he said.

Chakraborty stressed that his anger was reserved for Pakistan’s political and military establishment, while maintaining that ordinary citizens across the border were peace-loving.

Rising tensions between India and Pakistan

The war of words comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between the two countries. A day after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India placed the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty “in abeyance” as part of punitive measures against Islamabad.

Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir recently threatened to destroy any dam built by the Indian on the Indus River with missiles. Munir also said that if Pakistan faced an existential crisis from India, it will use nuclear missiles and take “half of the world down with it”.
