Dense fog and chilly weather conditions are likely to continue in northern parts of the country during the next 4-5 days, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast mentioned. 

Cold-day to severe cold-day conditions are likely to continue to prevail over some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan until January 22. 

Meanwhile, dense to very dense fog conditions will prevail for a few hours in the night/morning over some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh till January 27.

Isolated pockets of hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram will witness foggy mornings for the next two days. 

Fog engulfs Delhi

A dense layer of fog engulfed the national capital on Tuesday with the meteorological department issuing a yellow alert for the day.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 17.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average. The minimum temperature was recorded at 6.1 degrees Celsius as against 4.8 degrees Celsius the previous day, the weather office said.

As per the weather forecast agency, dense Fog conditions are very likely in isolated places over Delhi between January 23 and January 27.

Rainfall and snowfall update 

Jet stream winds of 130-150 knots at 12.6 km above mean sea level are prevailing over the plains of North India. It is leading to the subsidence of cold air and enhancing cold wave/cold day conditions over North India. 

The similar intensity of the jet stream is likely to continue during the next 3-4 days, which could influence a fresh Western Disturbance, leading to light isolated rainfall/snowfall over the western Himalayan region from January 25-28.
