Weather News Highlights: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall in northern India. Heavy rains lash Delhi NCR the capital is under a spell of thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning. Air India issues travel advisory amid bad weather in Delhi. This follows with the overnight downpours in Mumbai on June 16. Waterlogged tunnels and overflowing ponds become a common sight as Gujarat receives consistent rain. The consistent showers in Gujrat caused the Shetrunji Dam in Bhavnagar to overflow, prompting authorities to open 20 gates by one foot to manage the rising water levels. Apart from Gujrat, these showers bring a much-needed respite from the scorching heat in northern India.
The official IMD prediction for today’s weather includes eleven districts in Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Anand, Gir Somnath and Junagarh among others. They are under a red-alert warning and are set to receive extremely heavy rains. Surrounding areas are also under an orange alert for “very heavy rains, thunderstorms, lighting and strong gusty winds.”
Orange alert in Western and North India
Coastal districts of Karnataka and Maharashtra, too, are set to receive very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. Pune, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra with Goa have predictions in place for heavy showers.
In Karnataka, both Uttar and Dakshin Kannada, Chikmagalur, Udupi, Shimoga and Kodagu have been alerted orange by the IMD. Three out of eleven districts in Kerala include Kasaragod, Kannur and Kottayam which are currently set to receive a heavy downpour as well. States in the north including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha are under close observation of the IMD.

Districts which usually receive rainfall barely above 1mm have received 9.9mm rainfall in the monsoon. Regions like Jodhpur, Pali, Ajmer, Nagaur, Dausa, and Jaipur among the many others report high-rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning and winds.
