Opposition INDIA bloc, comprising parties like Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, announced plans for a “maha rally” at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on March 31 to defend democracy amid concerns over recent events, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
AAP leader Gopal Rai revealed the rally’s purpose, expressing worries about the country’s democratic foundations. He asserted that the bloc’s top leadership would participate, emphasizing the need to protect India’s interests and democratic values.
“Democracy and the country are in danger. All INDIA bloc parties will take part in this ‘maha rally’ to safeguard the country’s interests and democracy,” he said.
Rai condemned Kejriwal’s arrest, alleging it reflected a broader trend of opposition suppression through threats and legal maneuvers. He cited instances of other opposition leaders facing similar challenges, including the arrest of former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren.
The AAP leader accused the ruling BJP of orchestrating a campaign to intimidate opposition figures, claiming that no evidence of corruption was found in Kejriwal’s case. Instead, he alleged a monetary connection between a released suspect and the BJP, involving a substantial donation through electoral bonds.
“All INDIA bloc leaders are being framed in false cases. They turned Delhi into a fortress. Elected MLAs, ministers were detained when they were protesting. Kejriwal’s family was placed under house arrest. They sealed our party office. Yesterday (Saturday), at Shaheedi Park, they behaved with us as if we were criminals,” Rai further charged.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, Delhi’s Congress unit chief, echoed Rai’s concerns, emphasizing the need to protect democracy and ensure a level playing field for opposition parties.
While the opposition leaders expressed determination to proceed with the rally, Rai acknowledged the need to obtain permission for the event. He remained optimistic about receiving authorization but indicated readiness to address any hurdles in organizing the gathering.
