The India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed that a cyclonic circulation is situated over the Southeast and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea in the lower tropospheric levels. This atmospheric pattern is expected to lead to the formation of a Low-Pressure Area in the eastcentral Arabian Sea on November 8, 2023. 

In view of this, isolated heavy rainfall in the southern peninsular region of India from November 8 to 9, with a gradual reduction in intensity thereafter. This weather pattern is influenced by a Western Disturbance functioning as a trough in the middle tropospheric westerlies.

Additionally, a fresh Western Disturbance is on the horizon, likely to bring light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to the Western Himalayan Region until November 10, extending its influence over adjoining plains on November 9. 

Very heavy rainfall in Kerala, Tamil Nadu 

The meteorological department has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kerala and Tamil Nadu until Thursday. In light of this forecast, the weather department has issued both orange and yellow alerts for these southern states.

According to ANI, schools in multiple districts have been shut down in response to the unfavorable weather conditions in the state. The advent of the Northeast Monsoon has gained strength in Tamil Nadu, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall in the southern regions.

As per the weather forecast provided by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Karnataka is likely to encounter moderate to heavy rainfall until November 9, after which a decrease is expected. The substantial downpour in Bengaluru has caused disruptions in daily life, leading residents to express their concerns on social media, primarily regarding challenges such as waterlogging and traffic congestion in the city.

In the meantime, a yellow alert has been raised for seven districts in Kerala, encompassing Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod, specifically for Sunday. As per the Central Meteorological Department, the potential for heavy rainfall in isolated areas within Kerala is expected to persist until November 10.

Snowfall likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal

Under the influence of the Western Disturbance, light rainfall and snowfall is expected over several parts of the Western Himalayan region, “Light to moderate isolated rainfall/snowfall very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-BaltistanMuzaffarabad on 07th & 08th and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/snowfall likely on 09th & 10th; isolated to scattered rainfall over Himachal Pradesh during 08th-10th; over Uttarakhand on 09th & 10th November. Isolated light rainfall very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and West Rajasthan on 09th November,” the MeT Office said.
