The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Palghar and Thane districts in Maharashtra for Sunday. An orange alert has been announced for Raigad.

Mumbai experienced a heavy downpour on Saturday. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city recorded 6.80 mm of rainfall from 8 am to 10 pm, while the eastern suburbs received 11.53 mm and the western suburbs 7.42 mm.

On Saturday, Palghar was under a red alert, and an orange alert was in place for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, indicating intense rain activity.

Following the alerts, videos from Marine Drive and the Gateway of India showed waves from the Arabian Sea crashing against the seawall. While a high-tide alert was issued in Mumbai on Saturday, no such alert has been issued for Sunday so far, despite the ongoing rain.

Bridge submerged in Madhya Pradesh, traffic diverted

Due to heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, IMD issued a red alert for Madhya Pradesh. Jogitikariya bridge on the Dindori-Jabalpur route has been submerged in water due to the Narmada River overflowing. The authorities have diverted traffic from both sides.

“The Narmada River is in spate. The river is flowing over the Jogitikariya bridge. Traffic from both sides has been diverted… Adequate security arrangements have been made here. Police, Home Guard, and SDRF teams are deployed,” Satish Dwivedi, Sub-divisional Police Officer, Dindori, told ANI.

Red alert for multiple states

The IMD had earlier issued a red alert on Saturday for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in these regions.

“The Depression over east Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh moved nearly westwards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centred at 23:30 hrs IST of today, the 26th July over the same region, near Lat. 23.3degN and Long. 81.0degE, about 30 km south-southeast of Umaria (Madhya Pradesh), 110 km east of Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) and 170 km east-southeast of Damoh (Madhya Pradesh), IMD in its update on X (formerly Twitter) said.

“It is very likely to continue to move westwards across Madhya Pradesh and weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area by tomorrow, the 27th July, 2025,” it added.

A red alert has been sounded for the districts of North Seoni, Mandla/Kanha, South Khandwa, and South Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, along with Nanded, Parbhani, and Hingoli in Maharashtra’s interior regions. These areas are likely to see very heavy rainfall and cloud-to-ground lightning.

An orange alert is also in effect in parts of east Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, south Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, south Kerala, south Chhattisgarh, southeast Uttar Pradesh (including Kanpur), south Punjab, south Haryana, and Gangetic West Bengal. These regions may witness moderate rainfall and lightning activity.
