In response to the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that claimed 18 lives and left many injured, authorities have intensified security measures to manage passenger movement and prevent future incidents. DCP Railway KPS Malhotra said that managing footfall and preventing overcrowding should be the priority.
The senior official further stated that “disciplined passenger behavior” is crucial in avoiding chaos. “If people don’t rush unnecessarily, there won’t be a catastrophic effect…,” Malhotra told ANI. “If disciplined behaviour is followed, there is a great chance for such incidents to be averted. Everyone is a capable decision-maker. If you feel that the rush is increasing, halting at that time is better than boarding the train…,” the officer added.

“Given the current situation, if footfall increases and extra trains need to be operated, we have strengthened our manpower and force to handle the situation,” Malhotra stated.
The focus remains on both immediate crowd management and long-term prevention, while the Railway authorities continue investigating the cause of the stampede, Malhotra said.
“For the convenience of rail passengers and to clear the extra rush during Mahakumbh Mela, Railways have decided to run Mahakumbh Mela Special trains,” the Railways announced in an official statement.
The stampede at NDLS on Saturday evening was triggered by confusion over train announcements, Delhi police said. According to police, platforms 13, 14, and 15 were overcrowded due to delays in the Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express. As many as 18 people were killed in the stampede and several others sustained major and minor injuries.
