Brace yourselves for another harsh summer this year with the weatherman predicting a tough April-June period with extended spells of a heatwave. According to the India Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heatwave episodes lasting for about 10 to 20 days in a majority of regions. Rainfall for pre-monsoon remains below average for this month, the IMD said, adding that coastal India, eastern and south peninsular India will continue the dry trend which began in February.
Heatwave spells lasting for 2 to 8 days might affect Andhra Pradesh, Saurashtra-Kutch, Maharashtra and western regions of Madhya Pradesh this month, the Met department said. Madhya Pradesh, north and coastal Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will see a warm summer. Additionally, day temperatures during April are likely to remain high.
This summer, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra-Kutch, Maharashtra, north Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha can experience extreme high day temperatures and heatwaves. Also, there will be higher than normal heatwave spells during April to June, the Met department has warned.
“Most regions in the country will experience above normal maximum temperatures during the summer season this year. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, northern Odisha, adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and eastern India regions could experience normal or below normal temperatures,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general, IMD, explained on Monday during the release of the temperature outlook for April-June.
