Various parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday morning, leading to widespread waterlogging across several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange” alert, urging residents to prepare for potentially severe weather as heavy rains are forecasted to continue through the weekend.
The IMD has warned of possible transportation disruptions, affecting rail, road and air travel, with potential power outages in several areas. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected across northwest India, except for Haryana.
Delhi’s maximum temperature is set to hover around 28°C, which is six degrees below the seasonal average, adding a cool reprieve to the otherwise rainy day.
Traffic advisory issued in Delhi
In response to the waterlogging, Delhi Police has issued a traffic advisory, urging people to avoid certain routes. NH-48 is affected by waterlogging on the carriageway from Dhaula Kuan towards Mahipalpur, while Lala Lajpat Rai Marg from Kalkaji towards Defence Colony is experiencing disruptions due to an overflow of sewer water near Paras Chowk.
A depression near Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to move north-northeast over the next 24 hours, which may bring a brief pause to the rains in Delhi-NCR. However, other states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to continue receiving rainfall over the next few days.
Uttarakhand is bracing for moderate to heavy rainfall between September 13 and 14, with isolated areas forecasted for extremely heavy downpours. Haryana will see light to moderate rains with heavy showers between September 13 and 15, while both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rain during this period.
