Senior Haryana police official Y Puran Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound on Tuesday. Officials suspect the additional director general of police had shot himself dead at his government residence and investigation remains underway to determine the details. Chandigarh Police had rushed to the spot after receiving the information and forensic teams are presently conducting on-site examination.

Investigation underway

“At around 1.30 pm, we received information at Sector 11 police station. The SHO, Sector 11, and his team inspected the scene. A reported suicide had taken place… The body has been identified as that of Y Puran Kumar, IPS officer,” Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur told reporters.

According to a Times of India report, the wife of the deceased is a senior IAS officer who is currently on assignment in Japan. Amneet P Kumar is part of a delegation led by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The incident came mere days after Kumar was transferred to Sunaria Jail in Rohtak. Authorities are reportedly examining if recent professional developments or personal concerns may have prompted the decision.

No suicide note?

The reason behind the suicide remains unclear with officials currently collecting evidence and recording the statements of family members and staffers. Reports quoting senior officials reiterated that the cause of the incident would only be determined “after further investigation”. Those present in the house at the time of the incident are also being questioned.

“A team of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory is inspecting the spot and investigations are on,” the SSP told reporters upon being asked if there was any suicide note.
