A 53-year-old patient at Nair Hospital in Mumbai has died due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed on Wednesday. This brings the total number of fatalities from the rare neurological disorder in Maharashtra to eight.
Meanwhile, the number of suspected and confirmed GBS cases in Maharashtra’s Pune region has climbed to 197, with five new cases detected.
According to a health department release, out of the 197 cases, 172 have been officially diagnosed with GBS. The distribution of cases includes 40 patients from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 92 from newly added villages under PMC, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad civic limits, 28 from Pune Rural, and eight from other districts.
“While 104 patients have been discharged, 50 remain in the ICU, and 20 are on ventilator support,” the release stated. The number of deaths suspected to be linked to GBS in the region remains at seven.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the limbs, and, in severe cases, difficulties in swallowing or breathing.
