Some students, purpotedly from Galgotias University in Greater Noida, recently held a protest in Delhi over the remarks by the Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress Sam Pitroda regarding the ‘inheritance tax’.
When a reporter from AajTak reached the protest site and asked the students why they were protesting and what the messages on their placards meant, most of them were clueless. Some of their responses were even laughable.
The video featuring students has gone viral over the internet and has garnered varied reactions from the netizens over the students’ ignorance.
In the footage, these students, protesting outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi, were asked about the motive behind their demonstration. What ensued was nothing short of a comedy of errors.
When questioned about the purpose of their protest, one student passionately stated his desire for a developed India but lacked the knowledge of specifics.
Another student admitted to being clueless about the Congress manifesto, against which they were reportedly protesting, while several even struggled to read out the slogans printed.
When asked to read out the slogan printed on one of the students’ placards, the student read ‘urban naxal’ as something like ‘urban maxwell’.
The protest seemed to touch on a range of issues, including inheritance tax to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on ‘mangalsutra and wealth redistribution’, urban naxalism, and women empowerment (Nari Shakti). Yet, the clarity of purpose remained elusive.
The video on social media was met with criticism for the apparent lack of awareness by the students. Questions were also raised about a private university’s decision to allow a protest, particularly against a political party. The answers of students on camera also triggered a meme fest. Have a look.
Several people on social media have criticised the students and emphasised the importance of a basic understanding of political issues.
