A major fire erupted at a building within the Manipur secretariat complex near Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s official residence in Imphal on Saturday (June 15) evening. According to police, at least three fire tenders were deployed to extinguish the flames.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, stated an official. The house is situated next to the Kuki Inn complex opposite the Manipur Chief Minister’s residence in Babupara, Imphal. It was the scene of the incident around 5:30 pm on Saturday. The residents had vacated the house earlier amidst the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
According to officials from the Manipur Fire Service, extinguishing and controlling the fire at the house was challenging due to its abandonment for over a year.
The incident occurred a week after renewed violence erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam district, bordering Assam, involving clashes between the valley-dominant Meitei community and the hill-dominant Hmar tribes.
